Award Categories - Best Refurbishment

The award category for "Best Refurbishment" is designed to focus on refurbishments to existing structures located within 30 miles of the Brighton West Pier, which have led to considerable improvements in respect of comfort, structural protection, cost effectiveness and energy requirements. Entries should also demonstrate the use of recycled materials, eco-friendly products and an overall desire to reduce carbon emissions throughout the scope of the works.

Entries should include:

  • A synopsis of the project and its building performance objectives
  • Details of any special challenges, objectives or constraints and their design solutions
  • Specific elements of excellence or innovation in the design, equipment or application
  • Details of low carbon project features such as energy metering, monitoring and targeting
  • Evidence of actual performance and energy demand before and after refurbishment
  • (Green) Procurement, use of recycled/recyclable materials
  • Details of consequential improvements included in the project
  • Additional costs of specific low carbon measures and anticipated payback periods
  • Any BREEAM or LEED assessment
  • A description of the commissioning and handover process and how it contributed to achieving the building performance intended by the designers
  • Contribution to the character/attractiveness of the local area
  • Retention/enhancement of the character of the building  
  • Comfort and enjoyment of the occupants (if applicable)
