Copyright

What is Copyright?

Copyright law gives the creators of literary, dramatic, musical, artistic works, sound recordings, broadcasts, films and typographical arrangement of published editions, rights to control the ways in which their material may be used.  In many cases, the creator will also have the right to be identified as the author and to object to distortions of his work.

Therefore, copyright prevents anyone from copying your website and adverts and it will also protect your drawings and music creations.

How does it affect my business?

If you commission a person to design your new logo and brand and pay them money for the service, who do think owns the intellectual property rights in that design?  Copyright is an automatic right and protects the creators of designs, you do not have to apply for it.  If someone designs something for you it is important to ensure they assign those rights to you so the value in that asset belongs to you and your business.

As a copyright owner you have the right to decide whether and how your copyright work is used.  This may be by granting a licence to allow others to use your work.
